The church, with its eye-catching, original appearance of stone and glass, is a structure in harmony with nature, designed by architect K. Kellogg, who sympathized with the “churchless philosophy” of Kanzo Uchimura, a thinker of the Meiji Era (1868-1912). Although it is not possible to tour the inside if a wedding ceremony is being held, staff will give tours of the interior during open hours.

Kumoba Pond

Birch trees grow thickly around the pond, and there is also a 1-kilometer walking path and a cycling course. In the fall, the area is crowded with tourists viewing the autumn leaves.

Harunire Terrace

Karuizawa Yacho no Mori

About 80 species of wild birds can be observed annually, and the park is home to seasonal flowers and grasses, as well as many wild creatures such as black bears, Japanese serows, and flying squirrels. The park has been selected as one of the “100 Great Castles of Japan” and “100 Famous Cherry Blossoms in Japan. The “San-no-mon Gate,” a national important cultural property, still exists in the park, and other facilities such as an art museum, a zoo, and a children’s amusement park are scattered throughout the park, making it a popular place for citizens to relax. In spring, more than 400 cherry trees are in full bloom.
